Five Decades of CHFT
Half a century is a milestone in any organization but the ups and downs of support for co-op housing make CHFT’s 50th even more significant.
CHFT started in 1974 as a handful of like-minded young people looking to preserve existing affordable housing in Toronto and create more. In the 1980s and early 1990s, CHFT grew rapidly to meet the equally rapidly growing co-op housing sector.
In this, its 50th year, CHFT is once again part of a movement and a sector that is in growth-mode. The 50,000 people who live in Durham, Toronto and York region housing co-ops today are, whether they know it or not, benefiting from the legacy of the people whose profiles appear here.
We’re delighted to share with you this look back at 50 great years. And here’s to 50 more!
