My name is Asma Ali and I am a Child and Youth Care student at Toronto Metropolitan University, minoring in Psychology. My passion lies in working alongside youth and adults with autism and developmental disabilities, not just as a supporter, but as an advocate for their voices, rights, and full inclusion in all areas of life. I’m deeply committed to creating spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, and valued for who they are. I am also drawn to teaching and knowledge-sharing as tools for empowerment, especially within communities that are often left out of the conversation. For me, this work is personal, purposeful, and rooted in love, equity, and justice.

An aspiring urban planner, Chenia hopes to pursue civil engineering in the upcoming school year. Alongside assisting with community events at church—be it setup, clean-up, and everything in between—Chenia has volunteered with the Kiwanis Club of Toronto and GlobalMedic throughout high school, packing relief kits for victims of various natural disasters. As an urban planner, he hopes to design and implement more sustainable systems to create a greener future.

My name is Sirat Gedi, and I am a student at the University of Toronto Scarborough studying Health Studies. As a Black Muslim woman, I am passionate about community engagement, equity, and creating inclusive spaces. I’ve been actively involved in initiatives supporting gender equity, mental health, and diversity on campus. Growing up in Co-operative Housing has shaped my understanding of collective responsibility and social change. Through advocacy, volunteer work, and leadership roles, I strive to make meaningful contributions to both my community and the broader public health field. I am dedicated to fostering safe, supportive, and inclusive communities for all.

I am Zainab Amir, and in the fall I will be entering my second year at the University of Waterloo studying Science and Business with a specialization in Biotechnology. Outside of school, I enjoy volunteering at events for multicultural communities as well as mentoring younger students. My interests in science allowed me to develop technical skills while volunteering experiences gave me the ability to build meaningful connections, providing valuable experience for me as I move through my career. In the future, I hope to combine my passion for science and my interpersonal skills as a consultant in the healthcare sphere.

As a single mother to two incredible boys with special needs, I have developed a deep understanding of the importance of patience, inclusion, and advocacy. My name is Jean Isaac Mendita, and I am entering my first year of PhD candidacy at the University of Toronto in the Geography and Urban Planning Department. Most of my research focuses on equitable green space (infrastructure) development within the urban landscape, specifically in neighbourhoods with high concentrations of social housing. Apart from that, I enjoy being active during my spare time and playing sports such as basketball or spending time outdoors. My goal for the future is to expand my research further through an interdisciplinary approach that combines green spaces and sports.

Carolyna has lived in Alexandra Park her entire life and has always been an active member of her community, dedicating her time to volunteering at summer camps and weekly children’s programs. She has a strong passion for math, reading, baking, cooking, and baseball. In September 2025, she will begin her Bachelor of Business Administration, working towards her goal of becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant. She is a proud latina, bilingual in English and Spanish. Carolyna is a lifelong learner who values community, connection, and resilience.

Michelle Selvaraja is an incoming 1st year nursing student at TMU, who has just completed her secondary education at St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary school. Over the years, she has gained hands-on experience through volunteering in various settings, including being a personal support worker, assisting teachers at elementary schools, helping out at her local church and even starting her school’s very first Tamil Student Association club. Michelle has recently completed a 5 month highschool co-op placement at Scarborough General Hospital where she got to explore her passion for children and medicine, while working hands on at the NICU and Paediatrics department. Also musically inclined, Michelle enjoys her love for music through playing several instruments such as the piano, bass, and guitar as well as singing. Her goal is to combine her big heart, compassion, skills, passion and dedication to make a meaningful impact on the lives of everyone she meets, whether it be in a healthcare setting or her day to day life. She is very determined to continue her education journey and see what God has planned for her and her future.

Amar Emmanuel is an active member of her community and is especially passionate about serving voiceless and under-resourced populations. She has volunteered with local organizations to help women who have survived trauma to reconnect with their bodies through movement and fitness. Additionally, she has partnered with international initiatives to offer rehabilitation services to those living with chronic conditions, survivors of war, and families in poverty. Amar displays a commitment to justice in her ongoing efforts to help people experience their bodies as a source of freedom rather than bondage.

Hafsah is a Master’s student in Development Studies at York University and a lifelong resident of Peregrine Co-op. She has worked with the Green Career Centre in Toronto and Youth Challenge International in East Africa, supporting youth-led and women centered sustainability programs. She contributed to climate policy discussions at COP16 as part of a Canadian youth delegation. This summer, she will conduct fieldwork in Marsabit, Kenya, collaborating with pastoralist communities to bridge local knowledge, climate issues, and development policy.

Anthony Zhang has been living at Charles Hastings Co-op for 11 years. As an executive on his high school’s athletic council, he planned, organized, and facilitated year-round intramural sports at his high school. He is an active member of the Alexandra Park community, working as a lifeguard at the outdoor pool in the summer and teaching swimming lessons at a nearby community center. During his free time, he enjoys running, biking, and gardening on his co-op’s rooftop garden. He is currently pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering at McMaster University.

My name is Brehanna Alleyne. I’m a creative, motivated person with a strong appreciation for the arts and personal development. Painting has been a big part of my life, and I’ve even sold my artwork. I enjoy going to the gym to recharge and stay healthy. Working in restaurants has helped me grow socially and professionally, but my goal is to become a real estate agent. I’m inspired every day by my amazing parents and deeply value the love and support of my friends and family.

Hi, I’m Niki Quintana, and I’m entering Marine and Freshwater Biology in the Bachelor of Science program at the University of Guelph. I hope to become a veterinarian one day and work closely with animals and the environment. In my high school, I have led events as Student Government Spirit Coordinator, performed as a lead in our musical theatre program, been a member of the prom committee, and a member of concert choir. I also mentor new counselors at Durham Integrated Arts Camp and serve on the Outward Bound Youth Council. I love camping and canoeing and last summer I went on a 32-day canoe trip.

My name is Shyanne Ashwood from the Eamon Park co-op in Vaughan Ontario. I’m currently in grade 12, pursuing biology and music in post secondary this coming fall. I have the dream of becoming a high school science and music teacher. I have a passion for being outdoors, meeting new people and playing music. Specifically in a concert band as I play tuba and euphonium. I’m in the ARTS program at my high school for instrumental music, allowing me to explore my passion. My parents moved to Birmingham Homes Co-op in 2003 and I have lived there my entire life. Living in the coop has provided my family and I a sense of community through different initiatives like annual meetings, coop clean ups and gardening. Close by we also have the LAMP Community Health Center where I volunteered for their summer camps to create a welcoming, inclusive and fun camp experience for the young students. On the weekends I spend time teaching Arabic at a weekend school, helping youth stay connected to their culture. In the future I plan to study engineering at either York University or the University of Waterloo.

My name is Maria Gabriela Jayme and have lived in my co-op, Charles Hastings Co-Op Housing Inc for almost 13 years. I have been a member since I first moved in with my mother at four years old. I am proud to have been involved in my community as Student Council President and Minister of Finance, and being my cultural club president for South East Asia. I truly enjoy each role I take on to give back to my community and find any opportunity to enhance my leadership skills.
